How is the Tax on Tobacco/Nicotine Products Calculated?

State Excise Tax (SET), also referred to as “tobacco/nicotine tax”, is applied in accordance with applicable state and local laws. For tobacco products, all states apply SET, however for Tobacco-Free products most states do not apply any SET.

The way SET is calculated depends on the product category (Tobacco or Tobacco-Free) and the state, and are calculated in one of the following ways:

based on a % of the wholesale price (cost) to Northerner
based on Northerner selling price to the customer
based on weight (per selling unit)

How Do We Calculate the Sales Tax on an Order?

Example: A customer has placed an order in a state with SET and Sales tax:

SET rate in state = 56,93%
Sales tax rate in state = 7.25%
Wholesale Cost per can = $3.00
Selling price to customer = $3.99
SET per can = $3.00 * 0,5693 = $1.71
Sales tax per can = ($3.99 + $1.71) * 0.0725 = $0.41

Selling price to customer + SET + Sales Tax = Final price to Customer (per can): $3.99 + $1.71 + $0.41 = $6.11

Just my general observations.

FWIW I placed an order for 10 cans of grizzly wintergreen long cut mid april2023 on a Wednesday and the order arrived the following Wednesday. Not too bad but following the tracking the carrier didn’t pick up until Friday afternoon. Now I’ll give the benefit that some companies don’t ship daily and only a few times a week and in some cases once a week. I’m only 3 states away in SoCal where the commerce is all connected and super fast between LA and San Diego. When an item arrives at a major hub here in the afternoon, you get it the next day always. So Wednesday to Tuesday it took for it to arrive in the vicinity.
The tobacco was dated A3 (made in January 2023) and here we are 3rd week of April. That’s approximately 80-110 old. Before the stupid CA ban I would usually find the dates 30-60 days old and believe me there is a difference in the freshness. I always looked at the dates before buying bc sometimes you do come across some that are 4,5,6 months old.
That said, the last week of April 2023 my brother came down from Utah and picked some up for me outside of Vegas. These were dated C3(march 2023). Not over 60 days old. Way fresher and way cheaper too. $21.50 a log. No joke!

Needles to say I won’t be ordering from here again.
