ZYN Ingredients
As a ZYN user, it’s natural to want to know what these pouches contain in case of allergy or intolerance, and to be aware of any possible ZYN side effects they may cause. Nicotine is an addictive substance, so it’s not just a matter of curiosity – it’s important from a health perspective to have some understanding of what you’re putting in your mouth.
We’ve got you covered with this definitive list of ZYN ingredients.
What's in ZYN?
Every ZYN measures 13mm x 37mm and comes in a dry, Mini pouch made from plant-based fibres. The contents of a ZYN pouch include several chemical components.
ZYN Ingredient Type | Examples |
Fillers | i.e. Micro crystalline cellulose, maltitol & gum arabic |
Stabilizers | i.e. Hydroxypropyl cellulose |
Nicotine Salt | Nicotine bitartrate dihydrate |
pH Balancers | i.e. Sodium carbonate & baking soda |
Sweeteners & Flavorings | i.e. Acesulfame Potassium |
Fillers
These give ZYN pouches their form. You’ll find similar fillers in chewing gum that make for a soft, malleable texture with some added bulk.
Stabilizers
Stabilizers are what’s known as a “binding agent.” They enhance flavor, maintain the right level of moisture and are important for pouch consistency.
Nicotine Salt
This is pharmaceutical-grade, white powdered nicotine that is derived from the tobacco leaf or made synthetically in a lab. It’s known to absorb quickly and is 100% tobacco free. ZYN’s nicotine content is either 3mg or 6mg per pouch.
pH Balancers
ZYN’s potential of hydrogen – or pH level – is crucial for nicotine release and must fall within a specific range. If too high (alkaline) it can be harsh on your throat and mouth lining; if too low (acidic) it can wear away at your teeth and gums.
Sweeteners & Flavorings
All ZYN flavors contain no lactose, gluten or calories. They’re based on a combination of natural extracts and an artificial sweetener that’s used in sugar-free drinks such as Coke Zero.
ZYN Ingredients in Action: How ZYN Works
You’ll taste the flavor of a ZYN as soon as you put the pouch under your top lip, but it takes a little longer for the nicotine to kick in.
After a few minutes, your saliva will moisten the pouch to a point where the nicotine salt is activated. The mucous membranes in your mouth – or oral mucosa – will start to absorb that nicotine (either 3mg or 6mg in the case of ZYN) into your bloodstream and you may feel a slight tingle from the pouch.
As the nicotine circulates throughout your body, you’ll notice your nicotine cravings subside and you may feel more alert or focussed. This generally peaks around the 45-minute mark but is relative depending on how much nicotine you’re used to.
We recommend keeping your ZYN in place for no longer than 60 minutes, since the flavor and nicotine will be spent. It’s worth looking into how long nicotine stays in your system before replacing your ZYN with another too.
Nutritional FAQs About ZYN
- ZYN has been certified gluten-free by the FDA since they contain less than 20 PPM (parts per million) of gluten.
- If you’re lactose-intolerant, you can still consume ZYN. It’s considered lactose-free.
- 1 ZYN pouch contains less than 1 calorie.
- There’s very little sodium in a ZYN. Less than 10mg, in fact, which is roughly 0.5% of your recommended daily salt intake.
- ZYN contains no sugar. Instead, their sweetness comes from acesulfame potassium (or Ace K) which is a sugar substitute commonly used in sodas, like Coke Zero.
- Absolutely not. There’s no substance to the claim that ZYN, or any other nicotine pouch for that matter, contains fiberglass. It was rumored online that this would create “micro-tears” in your gums that sped up nicotine absorption, but this is false. Looking inside an open pouch, you may see a crystal-like clump that resembles fiberglass but is, in fact, nicotine salt. We ensure all ZYN pouches pass strict quality- and safety-controls through our Nicoleaks testing and would never sell products containing fiberglass on our site.
